ARTS CHAMPIONSHIP: Weaving in the Medici Period – A competition to choose Nottinghill Coill’s Arts Champion
Gather artisans and heed the call! Your Baron and Baroness will choose a new Arts Champion at Yule Toy Tourney from the artisans of our great Barony. Since Her Excellency has a fondness for weaving, bring your best piece to showcase your skill of Weaving in the Medici Period. This can be in any medium related to weaving – it can be made with textile fibers (bands, trim, fabric, netting), bast fibers (baskets, cordage, straw mats), metal (wire mesh, jewelry and adornments), or even from the oven (braided breads anyone?). Show your creativity and why you would be the best choice for Their Excellency’s next Arts Champion. Item does not need to be in Green and Gold. Documentation is strongly encouraged.
SCIENCES CHAMPIONSHIP: So you want to join a Guild? – A competition to choose Nottinghill Coill’s Sciences Champion
During the 15th and 16th centuries, guilds began to rise to power in the city states that would later become Italy. Formulas were highly prized, kept secret, and guarded. The Baron and Baroness will choose a new Sciences Champion at Yule Toy Tourney from the “guild applications” of the members of our great Barony. Come equipped with your best FORMULA. This can be in any medium. Some examples would be cosmetics, skin care, dye, recipes, metallurgy, blueprints – if you can find a way to justify your entry as a formula it’s an application! Show your creativity and why you would be the best choice for Their Excellency’s next Sciences Champion. Item does not need to be in Green and Gold. Documentation is strongly encouraged.
IRON ARTISAN: Come test your creativity to make items from random materials provided by Noble Rinn. Be sure to bring any tools you think you might need.
IRON LAUREL: How the competition works: In one day you are to create an item that represents/would have been used by one of 5 Historical figures. You may bring your own tools, and there will also be some provided. The materials to create your item/items will be provided and laid out on a table for you. On Saturday 12/13 at 10 am, you’ll start the competition by drawing a name of one of these 5 historical figures out of the bag:
Lorenzo de’Medici
Rodrigo Borgia
Leonardo da Vinci
Caterina Sforza
Sofonisba Anguissola
Then you may choose your materials and get started on your entry. You are strongly encouraged to research these individuals before the event, so you have an idea what you want to make. There will also be paper for you to write a few paragraphs explaining how your entry relates to your mystery person. Entries must be completed by 3pm and picked up before court.
Please E-mail Sensei Mizuno (ldypyrate@gmail.com) or Posadnitsa Kiur’iakiia (Baroness@Nottinghillcoill.atlantia.sca.org) that you want to enter Iron Laurel (that helps us make sure we have enough supplies)
FAQ:
1) Do you have to be a Laurel to enter? – Yes, but don’t worry if you’re not a Laurel, Nobel Rinn will be running Iron Artisan so we haven’t left you without a challenge.
2) Can I bring some materials with me? – Nope! Your entry must be constructed entirely of materials provided. You can only bring in tools.
3) What if I don’t finish it in time? – No Worries, your entry will be judged as a work in progress.
4) What if My Question isn’t listed here? – Email Sensei Mizuno or Posadnitsa Kiur’iakiia.
SCRIBAL: Scroll Blank Competition
Welcome one and all to the Milicent Shively Memorial Scroll Blank Competition sponsored by The Nottinghill Coill Scribal Guild!
The sharing and promotion of the scribal arts was a deep passion of the late Lady Milicent Shively. We wish to honor her legacy of skill, talent, and devotion with a Memorial Scroll Blank Challenge at Yule Toy Tourney.
Bring your scroll blanks to present to the populace for choice. As Millicent loved to see scrolls of all levels of expertise, this challenge is open to any and all who wish to participate. Beginners, Novices, and Seasoned scribes should all feel welcomed to participate. There will be no requirement for documentation for your work, but we would love to see it if you choose to share. The only request, (but not a requirement), is that the depiction of a Lily be included somewhere in the illumination (whether hidden, or the focus of the design). Judging will be populace choice. The scrolls will be donated to the use of the Barony in honor of our late prolific scribe, Lady Milicent.
The list of Baronial Awards and suggested wording can be found in the files of the Nottinghill Coill Scribal Guild Facebook Group. If you aren’t a member and just want to participate, I can send you the file directly, just let me know!
I look forward to seeing the lovely work! – Mistress Brig
A&S OPEN DISPLAY: Space will be available for those who would like to present their work whether completed or in progress. Please indicate ‘display only’, ‘feedback welcome’, or ‘competition-style judging welcome’.
